Avant le lever du soleil for woodwind trio (Tatiana Stankovych) PRINTED
This is a 4 minute work at an Intermediate level.
This is a one movement work that uses elements of structure and phrasing combined with more modernist and jazz influence harmonies throughout. The piece explores a variety of key areas by constantly shifting around searching for a key area to call home depicting nature settling in before the sun rises for the day. The texture of the piece often features a clear melodic line overtop of accompaniment figures that interweave all together. It opens with a quarter note theme in the flute with an eighth note motif being traded between the clarinet and bassoon. As it develops the bassoon begins to expand the eight note into a longer cohesive bass line that weaves around using arpeggiated and scalar motion, while the clarinet becomes a countermelody line that eventually morphs into a lower harmony of the flute theme. This texture change prompts the bassoon to play syncopated eighth notes to create rhythmic energy into the first of many key changes. As the music goes through the various key changes the material from the opening section continues to develop and be varied to create different characters and texture for each key change until finally arriving back in the opening key area of A major with the original material. However, the final cadence is abruptly interrupted by the second key area of Eb major to end the piece in an unstable condition still searching for their home key area. This leaves the listener in anticipation like someone waiting to watch the sunrise right before it is going to happen.
