$20.00Price

This is a four-movement work that features the lyrical side of the flute at an Early Advanced level lasting around 12 minutes.

This work is in a sonata cycle of four movements with a monothematic principal applied. For example, the main theme appears throughout such as in the middle section of the second movement in a transformed manner, and then later becomes the basis for the finale. Each movement in ternary form that highlights the lyrical and vocal qualities of the flute in different musical contexts. The first movement “Allegretto cantabile” is in sonata form with an abbreviated reprise functioning as a coda. The A section features a motif of a tied quarter that is followed by sixteenth notes in a neighbour motion leading to a quarter or two eighth notes all under a slur in the flute to demonstrate how it can sing through a melodic line. The piano accompaniment features a bass note in the left hand on the downbeats and an arpeggiated sixteenth note ostinato in the right hand highlighting the harmonies. The B section displays a lyrical theme consisting of slurred quarter, eighth and dotted eighth note in stepwise or small intervals. The return to the A section features sequences of fragments from the theme such as using the neighbour motion in a syncopated manner. Then a diminution of the B theme occurs now in half and quarter notes. The piano accompaniment is more transparent now with chords in both hands. A return to the original A material occurs to conclude the movement. The next movement “Adagio con duolo” is a form and variations with a solemn character. The piano accompaniment is chordal while the flute plays a vocal-like theme of slurred quarter, half and whole notes to highlight the flute’s tone colours and vibrato. A “Piu mosso” section contrats by creating a more active texture with quarter notes in the piano and long note trills in the flute. The following movement “Allegretto amabile e semplice” is comprised of an arpeggiated bass line in the left hand and melody when the flute is not playing in the right hand. The flute has another slurred and vocal-like melody of eighth, quarter and dotted quarter notes mainly stepwise and small intervals. The B section has a dialogue texture to it where a short motif of a grace note followed by four eighth notes passes between the flute and both hands of the piano in unison. The final movement “Allegretto narrante” has a declamatory character with a theme built on a half note followed by quarter note to highlight the meter. The piano accompaniment is primarily quarter notes when the flute is playing and thematic material when the flute is not playing. The accompaniment becomes more active as it progresses to become eighth notes in the right hand.
