This is a 5 minute work at an Early Advanced Level.

This is a short one-movement work depicting a pure and serene scene of nature. The opening section “Poco rubato” has a recitative quality with a lyrical string of eighth notes often in an arpeggiated manner that then leaps leading to a longer note value for the flute to be expressive on by either doing a crescendo or decrescendo. The section undergoes a constant shift between accelerando and ritardando to create an ebb and flow effect akin to a stream of water in nature. This leads into a “Misterioso” section that presents material similar to the opening but it develops differently this time into a more disjunct quality featuring large slurred descending leaps creating little ostinato patterns depicting cyclic elements that are often seen in nature. Next, a return to the opening material in a “dolce, cantabile” character occurs. However, this time the thematic material is highly ornamented leading to a very virtuosic accelerando flourish to set up a passage in the upper register of the flute before descending to the lower register again for the final “semplice, solenne” section that allows the material to unwind in order to conclude the work.
