Relentless Sounds of Regret (Bohdan Sinchenko) PRINTED
This is a one-movement work in a ternary form that uses elements of structure, form, and motifs of neoclassicism combined with a modern approach to harmony and folk-like melodies. The opening section “Andante mesto” begins with solo bassoon playing an espressivo melody based on a diminished fifth or augmented fourth interval in the lowest register, which one at a time the other instruments join. The clarinet enters with a variation of it followed by the oboe and then flute which introduces a different melody based around the minor sixth interval which creates an ominous character. The section continues developing these two themes with slight changes to texture such as an introduction of a syncopated quarter note ostinato, a descending bass line, and long note trills. The next section “Allegro molto e inquieto” has a quirky waltz-like character with a melody in the flute, a bass line in the clarinet that starts on beat two, and accompaniment figures in the oboe and bassoon. Eventually, the accompaniment becomes homorhythmic quarter notes. This develops into a second more lyrical theme that gets passed around in different pairings overtop of the bass line motif. This leads into an aggressive chorale-like section utilizing accents and dissonance to unsettle it. Then, a fragment of four chromatic quarter notes from the first theme of the waltz is passed around the ensemble to set up the unwinding of material to conclude the B section. The return to the A section features variations such as the bassoon’s melody becoming fragmented and rhythmically augmented and the chromatic fragment from the B section is interwoven into the texture.
